Our campaign for a fairer deal in our readers' dealings with the energy supply companies continues to keep the C-Store office phones busy.
One retailer rang to point out that suppliers have recently been trumpeting a fall in the price of gas and electricity nicely timed to coincide with the end of the cold weather, he said, but also ignoring that the power barons are passing on some but not all of the benefit of a fall in worldwide oil prices.
The retailer also remarked that power costs doubled between 1997 and 2010 and are expected to double again by 2020.
Marketing spin is one thing, but bullying customers is another. One reader who asked us not to reveal his name said his bill rose from £3,000 a quarter to £9,000 after he was caught in a 'rollover' contract. Attempts to explain that finding an extra £24,000 a year would cripple him fell on deaf ears.
In the end our desperate retailer signed his business over to a relative and told the supplier he had sold up. The contract was cancelled after they took what he owed them.
