New recommendations from energy regulator Ofgem could see an end to 'rollover' contracts for retail businesses and a victory for Convenience Store's Fight the Power campaign.

Many store owners have found themselves forced to pay a higher tariff for their gas and electricity because they have missed the window for cancelling their existing contract.

Ofgem's recommendations are part of a series of measures intended to deal with 'undue discrimination' that small businesses and domestic customers receive with their energy supply. They include new standards of conduct and a ban on unjustified pricing schemes.

The Fight the Power campaign has encouraged retailers to send notice of termination to their suppliers, saving themselves thousands of pounds a year.

The project culminates on May 1 - Cancellation Day - when thousands of retailers will be urged to look for a new supplier.
