New recommendations from energy regulator Ofgem could see an end to ‘rollover’ contracts for retail businesses and a victory for Convenience Store’s Fight the Power campaign.

Many store owner have found themselves forced to pay a higher tariff for their gas and electricity because they have missed the window for cancelling their existing contract.

Ofgem’s recommendations are part of a series of measures intended to deal with ‘undue discrimination’ that small businesses and domestic customers receive with their energy supply. They include new standards of conduct and a ban on unjustified pricing schemes.

The Fight the Power campaign has highlighted the rollover clause in energy suppliers contracts and encouraged retailers to send notice of termination to their suppliers, saving themselves thousands of pounds a year.

The project culminates on May 1 – Cancellation Day – when thousands of retailers will be urged to look for a new power supplier.
