A retailer has joined Olympians and pop stars on the Queen’s 2013 New Year Honours list.

Richard Brighton was awarded a MBE by the Queen for his services to the news delivery trade. The Berkshire retailer opened his first newsagents back in 1980 and now runs three stores in the area along with his two sons.

“I’m absolutely amazed,” said Richard. “I’m still in shock. I was just at home when I opened the letter and I couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t something I ever expected to receive.”

Richard is unaware who put him forward for the honour but believes that he was nominated due to the level of support he gives the newspaper industry. “We’re the 15th largest purchaser of newspapers in the UK,” he said. “It’s quite an achievement for a family business.”

Although 72 years of age, Richard remains hands-on with the business and has no plans to retire following the receipt of this accolade. “I’m very happy to keep going and I’m always canvassing for new business,” he said. “I also work with our new customers so there’s still plenty to do.”
