Shopkeepers have less than two months to comply with new fire regulations. From October 1, 2006, fire certificates will be abolished and there will be a greater emphasis placed on fire prevention in all
non-domestic premises.
The reforms mean retailers must carry out their own fire risk assessments. The findings must be recorded if more than five people are employed and be updated regularly. The assessment must consider all employees, customers, access and training.
Guides have been produced to help businesses through the regulations. The guide for offices and shops can be downloaded free at www.communities.gov.uk, or purchased for £12 by calling 0870 830 7099.
