Spar
Falsgrave Road,
Scarborough
The Spar store on Falsgrave Road is a busy town centre store in a good location just down the road from Scarborough train station, It's a large, modern shop with a post office, and has an excellent range of virtually everything a 21st century c-store should have. The only thing missing, which could possibly prove quite lucrative for a town centre store so close to a train station, is hot food to go.
The fruit and veg display was well stocked with a nice-looking, tight range of produce, and there was a fairly wide range of food-to-go products in the chiller.
The store is making good use of Spar's promotions, with a large Real Deals island at the front of the store.
It also used dump bins placed throughout the store
to highlight key impulse lines.
Beer stacks and a good range of wine offers promoted the off-licence section.
Unfortunately, the bottle of Coke proved difficult to track down. All types of Coke - bar the best-selling standard variety - were in the chiller, but when a member of staff who was doing the re-ordering checked out the back for spare stocks, she said they had sold out. After a wander down the frozen aisle, however, the Store Detective found some Coke, albeit not chilled, at the bottom of a dump bin.
While many shelves weren't particularly well stocked or well faced, staff were on the shop floor ordering and putting fresh stock out.
