McCain has launched a new gastro-pub inspired chip and two new ridged wedge variants.
Aimed at adult households, McCain Triple Cooked Gastro Chips come in 700g packs. They are chunky cut with roughed-up, crispy edges, giving consumers an in home version of the ‘proper pub chips’ you get in gastro-style outlets. Made from British potatoes, the product is prepared with luxury beef dripping.
McCain marketing director, Mark Hodge, said: “One and two person adult households are full of foodies who enjoy cooking from scratch, when time permits. They’re still on the look-out for convenient meal solutions and weekend treats but the products have to bring something different and exciting to the table.
“Eating out is also a favourite with this audience and they use out of home dining as inspiration in their own kitchens.
“Knowing that one and two person adult households account for more than two thirds of UK consumers, we’re adding to our adult-focused range with a chip that rivals those you get in good food pubs, helping to drive frozen aisle footfall with a relatively untapped audience.”
The McCain Triple Cooked Gastro Chips NPD sits with a number of popular McCain products that cater for an adult audience, including McCain Spicy Peri-Peri Fries and McCain Crispy Sweet Potato Fries, which boast combined sales of over five million packs, according to the firm.
Meanwhile, the firm is targeting families with nacho cheese and smoky paprika flavoured McCain Ridged Wedges.
Hodge, said: “Wedges often feature as a side of plate accompaniment, but there’s a big opportunity to highlight the sharing occasion in this category.
“To inspire purchase for sharing, we’ve developed two bold flavour variants that are perfect for one-time consumption, alongside other sharing foods like pizza and garlic bread. They are products that all the family can enjoy on a Saturday evening whilst watching their favourite TV programmes and spending quality time together.
“The ridge cut also helps to enhance the flavour and adds a point of differentiation - taking it away from the traditional idea of potato wedges that you’d see as an accompaniment.”
