Palmer and Harvey McLane is to extend its service to retailers with a series of category-focused initiatives.
Managing director commercial Peter Austen told Convenience Store that the wholesaler intended to extend its reputation as "a good mover of boxes" to a more central role. "We're giving our customers the tools they need to run their businesses," he said.

The moves include an extension of the Partnership Plus programme, which provides retailers with planograms, promotions and data on top sellers every three weeks, as well as visits from the company's 120-strong field support team.

Plus News sees P&H staking a claim in the news and magazines sector with a category management service. Trading director Richard Hayhoe said: "News is traditionally regarded as a complex trading activity, but we believe that we have the scale to offer a competitive and efficient service." Retail consultancy Lucid Direct, which has advised Tesco on news and magazine merchandising, is providing its expertise.

For Mace symbol group members, the new Promoting Retail Excellence Programme (PREP) will help retailers adopt retail practices that drive sales and boost profits. P&H intends to incentivise members with awards of up to £2,500 a year for those who implement PREP.

Trade sector manager Michaela Honeywood said: "We have listened to our members and are delighted to offer a refreshed proposition."
