A lot has been written about the rise of the discounters and the pressure on the rest of the retailing world to put prices down. But it doesn’t work for everyone. I have fairly regular chats with Hitendra Patel (Costcutter, Harold Hill, North East London) and he recently told me that, when the Pound Plus store opened up just a few doors down from him four-and-a-half years ago, he was worried. Now he tells me that it is closing down due to lack of trade. And Hitendra presses on.
