Wholesalers have welcomed the chancellor's decision to postpone for six months the 2p increase in fuel duty planned for this autumn.
The mounting price of fuel is already forcing some delivered wholesalers, including Palmer & Harvey McLane, to raise prices.
A spokesman for the Federation of Wholesale Distributors said of the freeze: "Any relief is welcome news as fuel prices are a big part of wholesalers' costs."
High fuel prices have also been forcing some independent retailers to reduce the number of trips that they make to the cash and carry. David Bridge, who owns Here to Please You in Bolton, said: "I'm now going to the cash and carry about two or three times a week as opposed to four or five before," he said. "I need to save money wherever I can."
