The two men responsible for the death of retailer Gurmail Singh have been sentenced to life in prison.

Muawaz Khalid and Nabeel Shafi will spend at least 21 and 20 years respectively behind bars after being found guilty of the murder of the Huddersfield store owner.

Their accomplices were also given hefty custodial sentences. Rhman Afzal received five years and four months and Umare Aslam six-and-a-half years. Shoaib Khan was sentenced to eight months in prison for assisting an offender, although this has already been served on remand.

Judge Justice Henriques berated the offenders for what he called their "violent and sickening attack". Passing sentence he added that "no defendant at any time during the eight-week trial had showed the slightest remorse".

The incident took place in February of this year when Gurmail was working alone in his Cowcliffe Convenience Store.

The gang attempted to rob Gurmail, but when he resisted two of the raiders beat him to death with wine bottles.
