The advantages of serving a good range of coffee in convenience stores are born out in new research that shows £676 is the average amount consumers spend annually on coffee from shops and cafes.

The findings by Ginger Research on behalf of syrup maker Monin show 61% prefer coffee to tea and the average Brit has their first cup of coffee at 8am.

Britons now drink an average of four cups a day, according to the survey of 2,000 people.

Seventy-six per cent claim they regularly experiment with different styles and flavours.

Broken down, 18% like caramel syrup in coffee, 14% ask for vanilla and 10% hazelnut.

Latte leads the pack as Britain’s favourite coffee, voted in first place by 41%, followed by Cappuccino 38%, Americano 26% and Mocha 16%.

Lee Hyde, beverage innovation manager at Monin, said: “Over a third of Brits confirmed they know more about coffee than they did five years ago and coffee drinkers are finding new ways to personalise their drinks, reaching for flavours from popular vanilla to more adventurous flavours like salted caramel.”
