More than a third (36%) of Britons are planning on having parties, BBQs and get-togethers to watch this summer’s sporting events, according to new research from the Co-op.

The poll of 3,300 UK adults found that 31% of respondents will weather-proof their meal selections with food that works inside or out, while 22.5% will make a decision about what to serve on the day itself.

Jemima Bird, customer director at the Co-op, said: “While the weather and sporting outcomes may be far from predictable, one thing for certain is that Brits will be determined to overcome their doubts and enjoy themselves with social gatherings and get-togethers come rain or shine.”

The poll also revealed at only one in 20 believe that a home nation will return with the European Football Championship title this summer, and just 2% think Team GB will do better in the Rio Olympics than in London 2012.

And, while 20% of respondents can see Andy Murray making it to the Wimbledon final, only 7% think he will lift the trophy.
