The Association of News Retailing has written to MPs about the Office of Fair Trading’s (OFT) draft proposals for the news and magazine supply chain.

The Association, which represents mainly c-store news retailers, argues that rather than leading to the loss of universal service to all existing news retailers, the OFT’s position requires the maintenance of an industry code of practice regarding the supply of newspapers, therefore ensuring universal supply.

ANR managing director John Lennon said: “It’s time to put an end to the factually incorrect notion that if the OFT’s position were adopted then retailers would lose supply. Its proposals are far from perfect but they are a step in the right direction toward retailer choice. We want to set the record straight.”

The OFT is meeting representatives from the news trade industry before it issues its final opinion.
