Students are put off a career in retail because they have had a bad experience of working in shops, says new research from Skillsmart Retail.
The Sector Skills Council for Retail says that 65% of students have worked in shops, but 40% of those did not enjoy the experience and would not consider returning to the sector after graduation. However, 64% of students who had a good experience of working part time in retail would choose it as a career after university, compared with just 8% of those who had a bad experience.
Skillsmart Retail is embarking on a Careers Ambassador Scheme which will see retail employees go into schools and colleges to promote the sector as a career of choice.
l In a recent survey by research consultancy HIM, 78% of store managers said there were opportunities to progress within their company.
