If you get an offer from a cold-calling rep that sounds too good to be true, then rest assured it will be exactly that. John Heywood, who runs Chillington PO & Stores in South Devon, was prompted to ring after reading the piece in the November 2 issue where I recounted Hayley Heap's strange experience of a rep offering her a cheaper deal through Powergen, even though her post office at St Austell was already supplied by Powergen.
"A chap came to see me and offered a deal with Powergen, saying he could get me out of my current contract."
John smelled a rat and rang Powergen to ask if this were true. He was told no, it's not. The contract cannot be broken.
So don't take people's word for it and keep a pen handy for them to put it in writing.
