Daljit Benning rang me from Paddy’s News and Booze in Sunderland with a bit of a dilemma. His PayPoint contract had been up for renewal (requiring an upgrade to PayPoint One), meanwhile Payzone had recruited him on the basis that it offered the same sort of service.

He says: “Within two or three days I realised it wasn’t going to work, but I gave it three weeks. There are not enough products and I’m losing customers. This is a PayPoint area.”

He went from doing 40-50 transactions a day to just four or five a week.

“They don’t do water, TV, electronic vouchers. They say ‘we do Anglian Water’ – what good is that to me?”

So he upgraded to PayPoint One on a five-year contract and called Payzone to cancel, but was told there would be a £350 termination fee. His rep suggested he just keep the terminal in a cupboard until some more services came on board in his area.

I asked PZ if they could waive the fee and got the following from the Post Office press office:“We are aware of the concerns that have been raised by this retailer regarding the payments that can be made at Payzone terminals. While a wide variety of services can be paid for at a Payzone terminal, with more partners being added all the time, we’re sorry to hear of this retailer’s experience. We are in contact with them to find the best solution.”

So far the terminal remains in the cupboard… but at least PZ is not charging him anything in the way of rental.
