It’s certainly no way to win loyal customers.
When Menzies Distribution sent out its Valentine on 14 February advising customers that it was putting its carriage charges up in April to compensate for the National Living Wage increases, folks got mighty riled. As many pointed out, they too had to give their staff wage rises. And they couldn’t just hike up their prices to compensate.
One retailer has now told me that he gave up newspapers at that point. He said that his carriage charges had been £35 a week. And he added: “I’m now paying off my mortgage with what I’m saving.” He is certainly not missing the early morning starts and the measly profits.
