Yet another reader has responded with a solution to pieces in previous issues about the huge rise in bank fees experienced by retailers with Santander accounts.

Mahesh Amin, who runs Jalaram in Brixton, South London, has the same Santander account that other retailers have rung about: the one that offers free banking so long as you only put £3K a month or less through it.

He says: “I’ve been using Nationwide Building Society for many years. In any month you’re allowed two deposits of £5K each without charges. They also provide cheque books so I just write a cheque to my NatWest account.”

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents has told him that Co-op Bank has an even better deal. As this is being written he is waiting for the info pack to arrive so… watch this space.
