Wimbledon retailer Manjit Gill rang to see if I could find out if other retailers had had problems with those big (2m) free Coca-Cola coolers. The company seemed to be doing everything right, with surveys to make sure that shops could cope with the heat generated.
"But the heat was unbelievable and our electricity consumption doubled," says Manjit. "The heat was such that fans had to work 24 hours and the noise was such that the tenant upstairs moved out. We had to get in two mobile aircons."
He returned his two coolers and complained about the cost. Coca-Cola passed on his complaints to its own insurance company. "But it took a year and when they replied I was told that I had committed in some sort of agreement to install aircon, which would have cost £4,000."
Ring any bells with anyone?
