Dr Glyn Reece’s wife Judith runs Penny’s in the village of Huntington, Chester, and has been doing so for 25 years come March 18. The doc helps out in the store.

It would be an understatement to say they know their customer base quite well. When Glyn rings me I can hear his running banter with the locals as they come and go. A two-minute phone conversation with him takes at least 15 while he fetches and carries, and dishes out opinions and advice to shoppers.

To mark this quarter-of-a-century milestone Glyn has been chivvying up support from all quarters. All the reps have been notified (and product is expected).

Booker has already donated some Euro Shopper and will be sending two of its managers to meet and greet people on the day.

The couple rather expect the Daily Mail to do something as well since Penny’s was voted one of the top 150 newsagents during a 2011 national campaign by Mail Newspapers. Penny’s subsequently became a Mail flagship store.

If you happen to be in the vicinity on 18 March I’m sure you would be welcome to drop in.

You can’t miss the place. The shop is conveniently situated on the pretty village green with free parking outside. It looks a treat.

Happy anniversary.
