Here’s a PS to the cartoon story slot. Charlie Chana rang from his Lincolnshire village shop, Savemore. He had just got his new non-dom rates. He qualifies for a mandatory 50% rural relief. But this time he read the ‘help with business rates bills extra notes’ that came with the bill.

The notes said the government has temporarily doubled small business rate relief for those estimated under £6K.

“I thought, great!” says Charlie. “So I rang up and asked ‘Do I have to apply?’ They said no, you don’t qualify since you already get the mandatory 50%.”

Charlie and I agreed, most people won’t read the notes. Best not to if you already get the 50% it will only upset you.
