Donations from convenience stores are continuing to pour in almost two weeks after typhoon Haiyan decimated the Philippines.
Rav Garcha’s Nisa Local store in Gains Park, Shrewsbury, held a fundraising drive earlier this week, calling on local people to donate unwanted clean clothes for adults and children. All money raised will also be doubled by Nisa and sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee.
The Southern Co-operative has also donated £10,000 to the International Co-operative Alliance’s (ICA) recovery fund following the typhoon.
“Supporting local communities is at the heart of our business ethos,” said Silena Dominy, Southern Co-operative secretary.
“The focus of the ICA’s recovery fund will be on the recovery of co-operative organisations and on redevelopment efforts that employ the co-operative model in rebuilding local livelihoods and housing for the long term,” she added.
Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Philippines on 8 November, killing countless people and leaving 600,000 more displaced.
