Thomas Collett, of no fixed abode, admitted to 19 charges of shop theft in court last week.

A prolific shoplifter has been jailed and made the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) which will put restrictions on him on his release from prison.

Thomas Collett, 29, was sentenced to three years imprisonment at Leeds Crown Court last week after pleading guilty to 19 counts of theft from a shop, two of possession of a bladed article and assault of an emergency worker.

Collett was also made the subject of a four-year Criminal Behaviour Order. The order prohibits him from entering any Co-op or Tesco stores within the Leeds Metropolitan area as well as its Springs Retail Park.

PC Carl Wilson, of Leeds East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This CBO places long-term restrictions on Collett, meaning that if he resumes his previous pattern of offending after his release from prison, he can face a further custodial sentence.

“Although the police play a key role in enforcing this CBO, we also rely on retailers and members of the public to report any potential breaches. The conditions of the order can also be amended by the courts should any new information arise relating to criminal or anti‑social behaviour.

“We recognise the impact that retail crime has on businesses - both in terms of financial loss and the safety of staff. I hope that those working in the retail sector are reassured by the action that’s been taken.”
