As we move into 2026, it’s important for us as a sector to reflect on where we are and where the opportunities lie in the months ahead.

Trading conditions remain incredibly challenging, with rising costs and shifting shopper behaviours continuing to put pressure on every independent retailer. But if there’s one thing our sector has consistently proven, its resilience. Independent convenience retailers have a strong track record of adapting quickly and finding new ways to grow, even in tough environments.

Shoppers remain firmly focused on service, quality and value and that creates a real opportunity for independents. Own label will continue to play a vital role in 2026, offering great quality at competitive prices alongside the trusted national brands customers look for. Retailers who stay close to their shoppers, respond quickly to demand and take a pragmatic approach to margin will be best placed to protect their top line and maintain loyalty.

We now have clarity on several policy changes coming down the line, including increases in employment costs from April and DRS in 2027. These pressures are real but the consistency in the roadmap also gives retailers the ability to plan ahead. 2026 will be the year to think about how your store adapts, invests and ensures it’s in the strongest position for the changes to come. SPAR retailers continue to lead the way in adopting practical technology that boosts productivity and I’m always impressed with their willingness to share their experiences;. If you ask for support, you’ll always find a SPAR retailer willing to help.

Retail crime remains one of the biggest challenges on the ground and we will continue to push for stronger enforcement and local support. Reporting every incident can feel time consuming and at times it may feel as though little changes, but it’s important that we maintain an accurate picture of the challenges retailers are facing.

Above all, 2026 will be a year where partnership and scale really matter. If you value your independence but recognise the benefit of bigger buying power, shared expertise and strong national support, being part of SPAR delivers exactly that. It combines the agility of local ownership with the collective strength needed to compete confidently in a fast-changing market.

None of us will succeed alone but together, we can navigate the challenges and make the most of the opportunities the year ahead will bring.
