Staff at all of the Abu Bakr stores have been specially trained to interact with older customers.

The Abu Bakr Supermarket group is aiming to turn everyday shopping trips into “meaningful moments of connection” for its older shoppers through its new initiative, which has been designed to support pensioners both practically and socially.

The supermarket has launched the Aisles of Support iniative in all its stores and in-store cafes across Leeds and Batley. It adds that the programme is aimed at helping pensioners feel confident, welcome and safe while doing their weekly shop.

Staff across all stores have been trained to engage with older customers on the shop floor, at the tills and inside the store’s Food 2 Go café - offering friendly conversation, guidance on affordable ingredients and simple meal ideas.

Managing director, Hamza Hussain, said the initiative builds on the supermarket’s community-first approach. He said he believes initiatives like aisles of Support are increasingly important in tackling pensioner isolation across West Yorkshire. “It’s about making sure every customer feels comfortable and supported.

“Our staff are already on first-name terms with many regular customers - that’s simply how we operate. Through Aisles of Support, we’re helping people choose ingredients, plan simple meals and sometimes just enjoy a chat and a cup of tea.

Many pensioners are managing household budgets on fixed incomes while trying to maintain balanced diets and independence. The initiative addresses these challenges by highlighting affordable staples and everyday essentials, suggesting recipes, offering tips to reduce food waste, encourage balanced, nutritious meals and supporting independent shopping with confidence.
