The Spar in Grosvenor Road, Belfast, has just celebrated the completion of a £1m expansion and refurbishment.

The new-look store has been under renovation for eight months, nearly doubling in size to 2,390 sq.ft,, and has also provided nine new jobs.

The store, which first opened in 2013, is owned and operated by Donna McMahon (above centre).

Donna said: “The significant investment and development of our offering reflects my dedication to our shoppers and local community. It’s been amazing to be able to grow this store into what it is today and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

In addition to accessible essential services such as PayPoint and an instore ATM machine, the store offers a wide selection for shoppers on the go including a Barista Bar coffee machine, a hot food counter serving breakfast and lunch and treats from local suppliers including Coyles Home Bakery and French Village.

In addition an instore Post Office is due to open in January 2026.

Donna added: “Our shoppers’ needs were central to our significant investment and expansion of the store. Nearly doubling the size has allowed us to deliver even more value on our shoppers’ doorsteps, with an expansion on our fresh and locally sourced food offering and entire range of everyday essentials.”

To celebrate the new-look store, the team recently held a community fun day with face painting, balloon modelling, goodie bags and vouchers for the local chip shop.

The store also held a ‘shop to win’ competition for the month of November, giving away £100 vouchers to four lucky shoppers. Shoppers who spent a minimum of £10 got the chance to enter by filling in an entry slip and posting it in the entry post box instore.

Paddy Doody, sales and marketing director at owners Henderson Group, added: “We wish to congratulate Donna and the whole team on this incredible investment into their store and local community.

“They are such an integral part of their local community, and this is a fantastic example of a long-serving retailer upgrading to provide the best services to meet the changing demands from their local shoppers. We wish the team every success for years to come.”
