Spar has revealed its enthusiasm for university stores after taking on its latest at the University of Hull.

The 6,000sq ft shop, which the university previously managed, is now serviced by Spar wholesaler James Hall.

The new outlet sells a selection of university clothing and merchandise as well as a full range of fresh produce, ambient, frozen and non-food products.

It also sells food to go, has an in-store bakery serving hot filled rolls and pastries for breakfast and lunch, and plans to add a self-serve Costa Coffee Express station.

Weekly like-for like sales at the store were reported to have climbed a fifth since changing to the new fascia.

Spar has stores at other universities including Lancaster, Birmingham, the University of Limerick in Northern Ireland, Nottingham.

Ian Taylor, Spar UK retail director, said: “We are interested to talk to any retailer or organisation that wants to enhance their retail offer. We have had great success with universities around the country and would encourage more to get in touch with us.”
