Simply Fresh is preparing to launch a new format for stores under 700sq ft in size as the symbol group continues to expand its estate.

Speaking at the ACS Summit last week, managing director Kash Khera said a recent trip to Hong Kong, where high-profit, small stores are commonplace, inspired the move.

Simply Fresh was increasingly beating the multiples to new sites, he added.

“We’ve had great success with landlords and developers who are after different types of stores. There is a need for an independent approach in new developments. Retailers shouldn’t be scared to go for these sites where they specifically want an independent brand,” he said.

Kash urged retailers to find a viable solution for the ‘one click’ generation. “We need to adapt to the future of convenience… but I don’t think Deliveroo is a long-term solution for the sector or independents.”
