A new Go Local Extra concept store has opened in Rochdale, with demand for Co-op branded products driving sales.

Owner Sasi Patel said local customers were “really raving” about the society’s own-label fresh, frozen and ambient bread and cake ranges.

The retailer opened the new 1,300sq ft outlet 10 weeks ago – his second Go Local in Rochdale – and confirmed he was “100%” looking to extend the products into his original site.

“We’ve started to drip feed the range in already,” he told C-Store. “As soon as it builds up its core base of that sales category then we’ll introduce it.”

The ‘new concept’ design has dedicated areas for vape products as well as alcohol, with backlit shelving for spirits and wines.

“It’s retro old school-looking with wine displayed on a metal mesh box, brick-style,” explained Sasi. “There’ll also be a table there for tasting events and a cheeseboard. That’s coming in March.”

Sasi and business partner Anil Velji worked with Parfetts to develop the second premises, which is located two miles away from their first store. Sasi moved his first store to the Go Local fascia in March 2019 after operating it under the Bargain Booze fascia.

Earlier this month Parfetts revealed it was aiming to recruit a further 150 stores into its symbol and retail club operations this year as it continues to grow its footprint into new geographical areas.

Co-op products have been available to Go Local retailers for more than a year, through delivery only.
