The All Outlets Crisps, Snacks and Nuts market in the UK is now worth over £6.6bn annually, with market value up by 3.1% over the last year (LY). Market volume in kilograms is just under 540M Kg, but the market is slightly down on LY at -0.2%. Pack sales are also down year on year (YOY) at -0.9%, with average pack size increasing YOY partially as a result of a volume shift to the major multiple grocery supermarkets, which have the lion’s share of the market.

The market is seeing slowing inflation with average price per Kg going from +3.3% YOY over the latest 12M (L12M) to just +1.5% up in the latest four weeks (L4W). The slowdown in inflation will also be driven by increased promotional activity in advance of the football in June and July.

The symbols and independent channel has 12.2% value share of the market, but the channel has a much higher unit share. Pack sizes in the symbols and independent channel are below the market average at 74 grams. The market average is 131 grams, with more bigger count packs and sharing bags sold in the grocer supermarkets. With continued cost of living pressure and reduced footfall YOY, symbols and independent channel volume is down -2.3%, however, value sales are up in the channel over the LY by 2.0%, and with faster price growth in symbols and independents the channel lost just -0.1PP of value share to the major multiple grocery supermarkets over the last year. With the growth climate worsening over the coming months and with football likely to drive volume growth in big packs, share recovery looks challenging going forward.
