The incident occurred at the convenience store on Botanic Avenue in south Belfast on 5 June.

Samuel James Robinson, 33, admitted theft and common assault as he appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court.

Robinson lashed out at the member of staff after being spotted taking up to £30-worth of pastries from the store, as well as causing damage to some of the food on display.

During police interviews following his arrest, Robinson stated that he could not remember the incident because he had taken drugs. However, he was shown CCTV footage and accepted it was him on the recordings.

The incident follows a number of recent violent in-store incidents across the UK, including a violent ATM raid at a Co-op Group store in Suffolk and an armed robbery at a McColl’s store in Crewe where a female store worker was injured.
