Tesco's decision to pull out of a public inquiry for its second planning application to build a store in the street prompted supporters of the 'No Mill Road Tesco' campaign to hold a street party and mark the 500th day of their campaign.
The shopping street has long been famed for its diverse mix of independent stores and the Independent Business Zone, promoted by Liberal Democrat councillors, would aim to preserve this.
Cambridge MP David Howarth said the creation of such zones could stop chain stores dominating in the future. "Mill Road is a unique, lively, diverse and friendly neighbourhood treasured by locals and visitors alike," he said.
"The present economic climate makes it more important than ever to safeguard our local independent shops."
Campaign leaders thanked local people for their continued support.
