Convenience stores under 3,000sq ft are likely to be exempt from new legislation concerning the recycling of batteries.

The Batteries Directive, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of batteries through increased recycling, will require retailers who sell batteries to provide recycling equipment in their stores.

During consultation, the Association of Convenience Stores recommended that smaller c-stores should be excluded, and submitted data which revealed its members on average sold about 10kg of batteries a year.

The government is now proposing that shops which sell less than 16kg of portable batteries a year - approximately 667 packs - should be exempt.

However, shops over 3,000sq ft will have to provide recycling facilities when the Directive is implemented in the autumn.
