Spar owner Darren Williams rang with an unusual query over this. He has a member of staff who does a couple of shifts for him and recently a few shifts for the local pub.
"Is he allowed to take paid holidays from us and then work at the pub, as we suspect he might?" asks Darren. "Shouldn't the holidays be meant to refresh people?"
A fine theory. I put him on to ACAS which offers all manner of free practical advice on employment issues and he was told that staff can do whatever they want during their paid holidays. It sort of surprised me too given that we have a government that really likes to be in charge of how much we eat, smoke, drink and how often we change our socks (erm, they call that one hygiene).
