Mo Razzaq of Premier Mo’s Blantyre has raised £6,908 since launching his very own Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) trial in November.

Ahead of the game Mo introduced his ‘Purchase, Refresh, Return, Reward’ initiative in-store to raise awareness of DRS before its roll out across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland in October 2027 - all while fundraising for local causes and helping clear litter from the streets of Blantyre.

Over the past seven months, almost 70,000 used soft drinks, alcohol cans and plastic bottles have been returned by shoppers through a designated machine located in a small room at the front of the store.

Participants received a 10p voucher for each item returned, with the option to redeem their reward in-store or donate it to a local charity via a button on the machine.

Of the £6,908.10 raised, £4,645.30 has been donated directly to local groups and £2,262.80 has been redeemed by customers, said Mo.

Boxing club Blantyre Miners ABC received a £632.70 cheque from Mo thanks to shoppers recycling their used bottles and cans.

“We ran this to show how easy recycling can be and how powerful a ‘donate to charity’ option could be when the UK-wide scheme launches in October 2027,” said Mo.

“This is about more than recycling - it’s about supporting the volunteers and local legends who keep our communities strong. Thank you for helping us lead the way in the fight against litter and proving that small actions can pack a real punch.”

The ongoing trial is in collab with The Fed, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners GB, Booker, Sielaff, Reloop Platform and Biffa.
