The take-home soft drinks market annually is now worth in excess of £15.6bn and is made up a series of smaller categories, with carbonates, energy drinks and water accounting for roughly two-thirds of the total market sales. The market is in strong growth, with value sales over the latest 52 weeks (L52W) up by 6.6% year-on-year (YOY). Growth has been driven by both volume (litres) and average volume price (per litre).

The YOY soft drink volume growth of 3.3% has been driven by the hot summer, with volume sales in the L13W up by 9.4% vs last year (LY). The water category in particular has seen strong volume growth with volume sales up by 12.4%. Water has also seen an increase in average volume price growth making it the strongest performing category over the summer.

Overall the soft drinks category is in price growth, with average volume price up by 2.2% YOY but price growth is slowing. The symbols and independents channel has a big over-trade in the soft drinks with a value share of 18.8%. The hot summer has helped the symbols and independent channel performance with the channel gaining 0.7PP over the L4W vs LY. The hot summer has enabled the symbols and independent channel to buck the trend seen in other categories where the grocery multiple operators have gained share. In soft drinks, symbols and independents have gained 0.1PP of value share over the L52W, however, over the 52W, major multiple grocers have still gained volume share with the symbols and independent channel gaining value through higher price growth.
