Bebeto’s special giant confectionery egg represents the amount of chocolate lost due to rising costs.

The Easter Bunny’s load is looking lighter this year, as rising prices and shrinking chocolate leave Britain’s Easter hauls smaller and wallets emptier.

Coined eggflation by confectioner Bebeto, the UK is set to miss out on a staggering 3,000 tonnes of chocolate this Easter, leaving families wanting more as a result.

In response, the supplier has unveiled what it’s calling Britain’s biggest sweet egg - a giant creation hand-crafted from 3,000 sweets, symbolising the estimated tonnes of chocolate lost to eggflation this year.

The squeeze is being widely felt across the nation: new research of 2,000 UK adults reveals 59% grow bitter over rising costs, while 52% have noticed their Easter treats shrinking before their eyes.

To combat the 9.7% surge in chocolate costs and the sting of shrinking treats impacting shoppers nationwide, Bebeto is also providing sweet relief with its free Eggflation Relief packs, helping families top up their baskets without compromising on Easter joy.

Phil Hulme, commercial director for Bebeto UK, said: “When over half the country is frustrated by shrinking chocolate, the Easter Bunny needs a little help.

“Brits are missing out on millions of kilos of chocolate this year, and no one should have to compromise on Easter joy. Our Bebeto Easter Foamies and Runny Eggs give families exactly what they want - more treats, better value and a fun-filled, generous holiday.”

Visitors are invited to come and see the edible giant and also pick up a free sweet pack, designed to top up their holiday treats in the lead-up to Easter. The packs will be available while stocks last until 2 April at the Wimbledon store on Worple Road.
