Retailers are busy devising events for the first ever National Independents' Week (NIW), which runs from June 4-11, 2007. The promotion is the centrepiece of the My Shop Is Your Shop (MSYS) campaign.
Devon retailers Lesley and William Brown, who own Frankmarsh Stores in Barnstaple, Devon, are hoping to boost their store's profile with a special theme for each day of the week. They include local produce tasting, recycling and a day for school children to see behind the scenes at the store.
MSYS chairman Alan Toft praised the Browns' idea. He said: "They are a wonderful example of independent retailers maximising their involvement in the local community. They have supported MSYS since day one and it is obviously helping to build their store's profile."
l MSYS bosses are keen to hear of other plans for the week, which replaces the popular National Independents' Day. The Browns are being sent a case of wine to reward their forward planning, and organisers are offering further cases to the next five readers to let Convenience Store know of their plans.
