The date on this issue's front cover is a fingers-crossed day for Camelot. The National Lottery Commission's closing date for interested parties to make their final representations about its provisional decision to withhold consent for Camelot branching out into bill payments is September 17.

Meanwhile, I am still getting calls from retailers trying to decide whether to sign up for a new five-year contract with PayPoint. The company says it didn't deliberately launch its new contract to head Camelot's attempt at rivalry off at the pass but I guess not everyone buys that. Some of you are clear you find the footfall minimal. Others are worried. Five years is a very long time for any contract given the speed of change these days.
