New laws mean that c-store owners could face fines if they allow their freezers and chillers to leak greenhouse gases. The Heating and Ventilating Contractors’ Association (HVCA) says that some refrigerants, known as F gases, contain fluorine which contributes to global warming if emitted into the atmosphere. HVCA head of technical and safety Bob Towse said that end users of F gases have legal obligations related to containment, gas recovery and record-keeping. They are also required to have leaks repaired as soon as possible by certified engineers. Anyone needing help to identify whether they use the refrigerants in question can contact HVCA at www.hvca.org.uk.
