The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has issued a guide detailing what to do if your store is the victim of a robbery.
The guidance has been developed to help retailers consider how they can prepare and respond to any incident of robbery in store.
It outlines how you should first make sure you’re utilising your existing security measures to prevent your store becoming a target for robbers. You can assess your risk by identifying the hazards, deciding who might be harmed and how, and evaluating any further risks and deciding on precautions.
The advice adds that you should make sure you not only record any findings you make but also implement them, regularly reviewing your policies when possible.
The guide goes on to detail how you can protect your store and colleagues by looking out for anyone acting suspiciously, making sure that you do not discuss security with anyone who doesn’t work in your business, ensuring CCTV is working every day and that all cameras remain free from obstruction, keeping till floats to a minimum and storing away all cash securely, making sure nothing is left unattended.
However, in the event of a robbery, it advises you to remain calm, follow robbers’ instructions, raise an alarm when safe to do so as well as other key steps to minimise the imapct of the crime.
