While it may seem a way off, the British Nutrition Foundation’s (BNF) annual Snack-tember will be live sooner than you think.
And is it ever really too soon to start young people thinking about healthier eating?
However, in a change this year - in addition to now spanning the entire month of September - the foundation is inviting retailers to participate in an initiative focused on promoting healthier, more sustainable snacking options for children and young people.
It comes on the back of new research from the BNF which has found that 79% of students surveyed usually have two snacks on a school day. Only one in five said they felt their canteen supported them in healthier choices. More positively, more than two-thirds are open to learning about how to choose and/or make healthier snacks.
Claire Theobald, education services manager, said: “We know unhealthy snacks can contribute to intakes of sugar, salt and saturated fat. But we can play a key role in empowering young people to choose snacks that provide essential nutrients, as well as being satisfying and tasty.”
Now, the BNF is seeking support from the UK’s retailers and caterers to amplify healthy snacking messages. Theobald explained: “We’re looking to partner with UK retailers so the information that children and young people will be receiving in schools, clubs and at home during Snack-tember is echoed in canteens, stores and online to help us amplify the healthier, more sustainable snacking message.”
