Fans of the viral dot cake recipe are in for a treat, as Co-op has today announced it is to become the first national UK retailer to bring the social media sensation to its shelves.
Co-op is launching its own version of dot cakes in two varieties in more than 1,600 stores across the UK.
The colourful ‘cake in a cup’ first went viral earlier this year after a New York bakery amassed a huge fanbase for its eye-catching cakes with satisfying crunchy tops and fluffy layered sponge beneath.
The cakes have since attracted millions of fans globally online, with many creating their own DIY versions at home in reponse to the trend.
Dots explained
A ‘dot cake’ typically features a layered sponge cake base and a completely flat buttercream top, covered in crunchy multi-coloured sprinkles known as ‘dots’ which are perfect for satisfying ASMR-style videos when scraped with a spoon, helping to fuel the online trend.
Co-op is the first retailer to launch its own dot cakes and bring the viral sensation to shoppers nationwide - but they’re only in stores for six weeks.
Staying true to the original flavours social media users love, Co-op’s Raspberry & Vanilla Dot Cake (166g, RRP £2.50) combines vanilla flavour sponge, layered with raspberry jam and vanilla flavour frosting, topped with sugar decorations.
Chocolate lovers can also get their hands on the retailer’s Chocolate & Salted Caramel Dot Cake (177g, RRP £2.50), featuring chocolate flavour sponge, layered with salted caramel and chocolate caramel flavour frosting, finished with white and milk chocolate crispy balls.
Biggest trend
Kevin Sargent, senior product development manager for cake at Co-op, said: “We’re excited to be hot on the heels of one of this year’s biggest food trends by being the first retailer to bring them to shops across the UK. They tap into everything people love right now - aesthetically pleasing, nostalgic treats that are as fun to eat as they are to share online.”
