Shocking new research commissioned by food waste app, Too Good To Go, finds that Brits will bin 50 million individual brussels sprouts this Christmas

With over half of Brits likely to over-buy food this festive season, a list of the top ten foods to be wasted has been released.

Sprouts top the list, and Too Good To Go has recommend meal-planning, freezing and getting creative with leftovers to reduce wastage.

A survey of 2,000 adults found 15 per cent expect to bin the much-maligned veg this festive season, each typically tossing seven of the little green balls after clearing plates on the big day.

A spokesperson for Too Good To Go said: “Every Christmas we see people buying far more food than they actually need, often because no one wants to be caught short over the holidays.

But overbuying is one of the biggest drivers of household food waste. By planning ahead and being realistic about what you’ll actually use, it’s much easier to make the most of every ingredient and stop perfectly good food from going to waste. “

Of those who often end up over-buying, 56% want to make sure there’s enough for everyone, and 37% worry about running out of essentials.

Nearly a quarter (23%) admitted they usually buy a Christmas cake every year, even if they don’t think anyone will eat it.

But to help minimise food waste, 53 % will work leftovers into sandwiches or wraps and 36% shift into ‘soup mode’, building up hearty soups and stews.
