Prime minister David Cameron has announced a package of measures to help communities and businesses affected by the recent riots.
Retailers will now have more time to claim for losses resulting from the riots. Any uninsured individual or business can make a claim under the Riot Damages Act, but the period to reclaim losses will be extended from 14 days to 42 days.
Association of Convenience Stores chief executive James Lowman said: “We called for [this extension] in meetings and discussions with the home secretary and business secretary this week. We are grateful they have listened and have taken this practical step.”
A £20m high street support scheme will also be available to affected retailers, and a separate £10m fund will help repair communities. In addition, councils will be able to offer business rates relief for riot-hit businesses.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has confirmed that its members are working as quickly as they can to deal with claims and most have 24 hour call centres, Cameron said. He added that the government was working closely with bankers to ensure affected businesses of all sizes receive help.
