A prolific shoplifter who was extremely swiftly arrested by an officer after a Rochford store reported he had breached a banning order has been jailed.
Stefan Jaworski, 42, from Rayleigh, was arrested within just 45 seconds of Essex Police receiving a call from shop staff on 11 July.
He appeared before Southend magistrates last week (14 July) and admitted two shop thefts on 27 and 28 June, plus an attempted theft on 26 June. He also admitted breaching a five-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) three times in just a couple of weeks.
Issued in November 2022, the original CBO forbade him from entering numerous stores across England and Wales. These included all Sainsbury’s Locals, any branch of Co-op or Marks & Spencer as well as any BP garage with an M&S shop.
The court was told Jaworski had stolen £12.50 of steak from Morrisons in Rayleigh High Street, and washing liquid pods from the nearby QD Stores.
He’d also attempted to steal £95 of cheese from M&S in Eastwood Road, Rayleigh - thus breaching his CBO. He then also breached it on two further occasions in June, it was found.
Officers from Rochford Neighbourhood Policing Team had been on patrol at the town’s train station when they responded to reports Jaworski was at the Sainsbury’s Local opposite. It took them just 45 seconds to arrive and arrest him.
Sentencing him to a total of eight months, magistrates told Jaworski he had a “flagrant disregard for people and their property” and that it was a deliberate breach of his CBO. They also ordered him to pay a total of £119.99 compensation. The CBO continues until 10 November 2027.
Investigating officer, PC Melissa Bailey of Rochford Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Jaworski is a prolific offender and has impacted local businesses. Thanks to the staff at stores that he’s targeted providing us with clear CCTV footage and statements, we were able to present a strong case, leaving him no choice but to admit his crimes.
“We won’t tolerate this criminal behaviour and our team will deal with any offender robustly, efficiently and effectively. We encourage people to report information about crimes and criminal activity to us so we can investigate. It also helps us target our operational activity where it’s most needed.”
