West Midlands Police were today celebrating after a persistent shoplifter was put behind bars this weekend, after being caught stealing from stores despite serving a suspended sentence for the same crime.
The crime took place in Coventry, with the arrest happening after his latest theft from a store on Humber Road in Lower Stoke on 25 July.
“We quickly identified Ricky Sturges as being responsible and he was arrested in relation to the theft,” said the force.
However, the 34-year-old was already on a suspended prison sentence after being convicted of shop thefts in Stoke and Wyken previously. He admitted the more recent theft and was jailed for four weeks at Coventry Magistrates Court on Saturday (2 August).
Sturges, of Harefield Road, Coventry was also told to serve the 12 weeks of his suspended sentence in prison, meaning he was jailed for four months in total.
A spokesperson from the force said: “We know the impact of theft on our businesses and communities, which is why we’re committed to taking action across the city. We’re taking preventative and enforcement action as part of #SaferStreetsSummer, a national initiative with a particular focus on anti-social behaviour, retail and street crime.”
