A shoplifter who stole hundreds of pounds’ worth of goods from numerous stores in Dudley has been jailed this week, after being convicted of 11 incidents of theft spanning just under three weeks.

Robert Philpott, aged 41, was charged after offences in Dudley, Oldbury, Lye, Norton and Stourbridge.

On 29 June, he stole a basket full of items to the value of £145 from a store on Regent Road, Oldbury. He then went on to commit further offences and stole more than £1,000 of items.

His crime spree lasted nearly three weeks. However, thanks to good quality CCTV footage from stores and the knowledge of local officers, West Midlands Police were able to identify Philpott as a suspect.

On 27 July, neighbourhood officers were conducting patrols in Brierley Hill when they spotted him, and he was arrested on Mill Street. He was then subsequently charged and admitted all offences put to him. Philpott, of no fixed address, was jailed for 22 weeks at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court on 28 July.

This summer, the a spokesperson from the force says it is “tackling town centre crime and anti-social behaviour that affects communities most,” as part of the national #SaferStreetsSummer initiative.
