More MPs are showing support for their local stores in the run up to National Independents' Week, which is being held from May 29 to June 4.

"It is very encouraging to see that so many MPs are keen to demonstrate their support for local shops, and we are on track to introduce 50 MPs to great stores in constituencies up and down the country," said My Shop is Your Shop (MSYS) spokesman David Visick.

Singh's Premier in Sheffield was the latest to receive the MSYS Gold Award for Community Retailing, awarded by former Home Secretary David Blunkett.

The Association of Convenience Stores has lent its backing to the MSYS Gold Award initiative. Chief executive James Lowman urged retailers to get in touch with their MP. "Getting MPs into local shops is an excellent chance for retailers to impress them with their proposition of community engagement, personal service and tailored product mix, and to demonstrate the value of diversity in the retail estate," he said.

"A good relationship with your MP can work wonders for a small business on a local level, and this programme of visits encourages MPs to support independents on a national level, too."
